Queen's Award for Carisma
June 2007 Carisma has been given a Queen's Award for Vountary Service in recognition for its work in the communities hit by gang and gun violence. Paul Keeble of Carisma commented: "It's nice that our efforts have not gone unnoticed, but the credit belongs to everyone who has taken part in PeaceWeek, or in some other way has decided to act positively to reclaim our streets and our young people. Carisma is about all of us pointing in the same direction, serving each other."

PeaceWeek 2007 ran from February 25 to March 4 and despite some problems due to lack of personpower, was again a big success, with probably the biggest amount of partner organisations yet. Report and pictures here.

Tony Blair visits Moss Side and Hulme
February 22 Carisma was asked to facilitate a meeting at Zion Arts between local community representatives and Prime Minister Tony Blair. The meeting was also attended by senior Police and Council officers and footballer Rio Ferdinand. Rio expressed his support for the work being done in Moss Side, reminding us he also came from an area recently in the news for gun crime, Peckham in London. Concerns about tackling gun crime and ideas about helping our young people were shared, as well as a plea for better resourcing of individuals and groups working in the community. While we are grateful for this opportunity, the question we are left with is - will it make a difference? Time will tell. |
