Street Pastors for Inner-South Manchester
In November and December CARISMA hosted a series of meetings between Rev Les Isaac, from the Asension Trust in London, and local Church Leaders, and with others including Police and Councillors, to look at introducing a''Street Pastors' scheme in parts of Moss Side, Hulme, Longsight, and other areas where there is local interest. Street Pastors was launched in London in 2003 as a response from the Churches to street crime. The Pastors are concerned people who are trained and then go onto the streets to engage young people where they are, to get to know them and their needs and find out what can be done to help them. The scheme has been successful and was launched here in Manchester in April 2004. The first team began working on the streets of Moss Side in June, and a second team has been working in Longsight since December 2005. |
